This was such a wonderful treat and it only required four ingredients: Yogurt, frozen cherries, sugar and vanilla.
First we strained one quart of homemade yogurt. We made this yogurt using a cooler and quart sized mason jars. We strained the yogurt using a mesh strainer lined in coffee filters.
We let the yogurt strain overnight until it was the consistency of cream cheese. Usually straining yogurt for about 8 hours is enough to make it about like greek yogurt, if you want to make yogurt cheese you need to strain it for about 12-14 hours.
Next, we put about 3 cups of frozen cherries and 1/2 cup of sugar in the food processor. You could add more sugar if you like it sweeter, but I don’t recommend trying to make your fro-yo taste like ice cream. We love (it’s grown on us) the refreshing taste of tart frozen yogurt.
You don’t have to blend the cherries and sugar for long, just about 1 or 2 minutes.
Then you just add the puree to the strained yogurt and mix it all up in an ice cream machine.
This frozen yogurt was really thick and I had to mix it by hand for awhile.
This was a great treat to cool down and the kids loved it, even though it didn’t have a bunch of sugar in it.

I love this homemade frozen yogurt recipe. It is similar to the tart and tangy probiotic rich yogurt found at Red Mango or Pinkberry, except better because it’s made at my house and costs next to nothing.
If you get hooked on this like I am, you’ll want to start making your own big batches of yogurt so you can stock up your freezer with this healthy treat.
This is super easy…all you need is plain yogurt, sugar and vanilla.
Here I am mixing in some vanilla and sugar into my plain yogurt. I’ve strained this yogurt overnight to make a rich, thick greek-style yogurt. You could just buy greek yogurt at the store. This is a great way to use my homemade yogurt, which tends to be a bit thin.

Then pour the mixture into the ice cream maker. I have a very simple and inexpensive ice cream maker. It has a canister that can be removed. You place it in the freezer for at least 24 hours prior to using. I just keep it in the freezer, so it’s always ready to go.
The yogurt will expand as it freezes so you only want to fill it up half way full. Here is what the frozen yogurt looks like when it’s done (in about 15 minutes). I like to put the ice cream in the freezer for a few hours to firm it up a bit.

Now, this is NOT like ice cream. It is tangy and refreshing like lemon gelato. In fact many Pinkberry and Red Mango fans that try to re-create their favorite fro-yo at home mistakenly add lemon juice to their frozen yogurt.
That really is the closest thing to compare it to, but really it has a completely unique taste that quickly becomes addictive. I can’t get enough of it…it’s so good. And it’s just strained plain yogurt, sugar (or a healthier natural sweetner) and vanilla, so it is actually very good for you.

I just found a delicious recipe that I am looking forward to experimenting with. It is great for anybody who has ever wanted to try making frozen yogurt without an ice cream maker.
The frozen yogurt is made with 2 cups creamy yogurt, 1/3 cup sugar, 3 egg whites and 4/5 cup water. You simply heat the water and sugar in a pot on the stove to make a syrupy liquid. Whip the egg whites to a firm meringue. Pour the syrup onto the egg whites while whipping with a mixer. Add the yogurt mixing until smooth and light and then pour it all into a glass dish and freeze for 3 hours.
Forget the cookies. I might just try out this frozen yogurt.
You don’t have to use cherry yogurt in this recipe. A vanilla or other fruit flavored yogurt would be yummy too.
This recipe could also be used with store bought cookies or another kind of homemade cookie. I’d like it with chocolate chip cookies and my homemade vanilla frozen yogurt.
Check it out here. This recipe will give you lots of yummy ideas!
Also check out the nutritional information. If you make your dessert the same way as the recipe, each serving only has 10 grams of fat. Not bad for chocolate and frozen yogurt…Enjoy!
